Practical guidance and quiet reassurance for life on the road in Australia.

Travelling Australia long-term is one of the most freeing things you can do.
But sometimes, especially when you’re new to it or doing it alone, questions and worries appear that Google can’t really answer.
Not because the information doesn’t exist somewhere. But because what you actually need isn’t a search result.
You need someone who has genuinely lived this life to talk it through with you.
Maybe you’re wondering things like:
- Do I actually need a UHF radio, or is that overkill?
- How do dual batteries work, and what do I really need?
- Is it safe to travel through that remote area alone?
- Where can I safely camp tonight?
- Someone told me that road is dangerous. Should I be worried?
- What do I do if something goes wrong when I’m far from anywhere?
Or maybe it’s not a question at all. Maybe something unexpected has happened and you just need someone calm and experienced to help you sort it out.
A client came to me overwhelmed before she’d even left home.
She was in her 60s, planning to travel Australia solo for the first time after a divorce. Her children had long left home, and she wanted space to think and to get to know herself again on the road.
I was very fearful. I wanted the experience the trip would give me, but the logistics terrified me. I knew nothing about what was out there or how to manage it.

The problem was that everyone around her had an opinion.
Well-meaning friends and family were piling on advice, much of it contradictory, some of it just wrong, and she was becoming more anxious, not less. The closer her departure date got, the more overwhelmed she felt.
She came to me with questions. Some were practical: how do batteries work, do I really need a UHF radio, is it safe to travel through certain remote areas alone? Some were worries that just needed someone calm and experienced to say “that’s not actually something you need to stress about.”
She paid me during that preparation period, because having one person she could ring, someone who had actually lived this life and wasn’t just guessing, turned out to be worth a great deal when everyone else was adding to the noise.
Then, months later, something happened that showed both of us a different kind of value entirely.
She was travelling by then. She had a frightening medical episode and was rushed to the hospital in Exmouth for tests. She rang me from her hospital bed, worried and a bit frightened, and asked if I could sort out her caravan park booking, extend her stay, make sure her vehicle was locked and her gear secured, and adjust the next few days of her itinerary.
It took me about an hour and a half.
For her, it meant she could simply lie in that hospital bed and focus on getting better, instead of lying there anxious about logistics she had no way to handle from a ward.
That moment made both of us realise that having someone experienced and available isn’t just useful in the planning stage. It matters all the way through.
She also used to check in with me using her Zoleo when she was somewhere remote.

About Seamus:
I’ve spent most of my life travelling Australia in one form or another, hitchhiking in my younger years, working along the way and living out of vehicles for extended periods. I’ve been through and lived in remote areas most people never see, camped on the side of roads that don’t appear on most maps, and learned most of what I know the slow way, over many decades.
For the past two and a half years, I’ve been living full-time on the road, running my businesses from wherever I happen to be parked. Toyota Troopy, lithium batteries, 900W of solar, and Starlink internet.
I’m not selling advice from behind a desk. I live this life.
